Gǔdé fǎshī 古德法師 (“the Master of AntiqueVirtue”, late Míng)
A late-Míng monk active at Yúnqīsì 雲棲寺 — the temple of 袾宏 Yúnqī Zhūhóng — known almost exclusively for his Ēmítuó jīng shūchāo yǎnyì 阿彌陀經疏鈔演義 KR6p0022 in four juǎn, an explanatory amplification (yǎnyì 演義) of Zhūhóng’s Shūchāo KR6p0019. The Yǎnyì signs him simply as 雲棲古德法師, with the parallel attribution 門人慈帆智願定本 (finalised by his disciple Cíháng Zhìyuàn).
His personal name (míng 名) is not preserved in the Xùzàngjīng recension or in the standard biographical literature; “Gǔdé” 古德 (“antique virtue”) functions as a hào 號 rather than as a personal name, and his identity is now lost behind the title. The implication of gǔdé in the immediate Yúnqī-circle context is that he was a senior disciple — perhaps an honorific designation given by Zhūhóng or by a Yúnqīsì abbot. The Yǎnyì was completed and finalised by his pupil 慈航智願 Cíháng Zhìyuàn shortly after his death; the date of composition is not preserved but plausibly falls in the early seventeenth century, after Zhūhóng’s own death (1615).
