Shǐ Jiàn 史鑑 (1434–1496), zì Mínggǔ 明古, hào Xīcūn 西村, of Wújiāng 吳江 (Sūzhōu, Jiāngsū) — note that another contemporary Shǐ Jiàn of Chángzhōu (Hóngzhì jǐwèi [1499] jìnshì) is recorded on the Tàixué tímíng bēi but is a different person. Wáng Shù 王恕 when xúnfǔ (governor) of Jiāngnán heard of his name and met him, consulted him on timely-affairs; Shǐ pointed out lìbìng (advantages-and-defects). The Wúzhōng shuǐlì (Wú-region water-works) was his specialty. He chose not to take office. His writings — Xīcūn jí in 8 juǎn + Míng-early lièzhuàn in 1 juǎn + supplements — were compiled and cut in Jiājìng by his grandson Zhōu 周, with prefaces by Zhōu Yòng 周用 and Lú Xiāng 盧襄. The original recension was reportedly 28 juǎn (according to Wáng Shìzhēn’s Xiāngzǔ bǐjì, an edition from Chén Jìrú 陳繼儒 — the Xīcūn jí in 28 juǎn); the WYG preserves 8 juǎn (KR4e0143).
