Yuán-period 元 scholar and official; grandson of the great Neo-Confucian classicist Wú Chéng 吳澄 (1249–1333). Zì Bóshàng 伯尚. Native of Lèān 樂安 in Fǔzhōu 撫州 (modern Jiāngxī).
Career. Inherited his grandfather’s classical learning. Recommended (jiàn) to the Yuán court and appointed Guózǐ zhùjiào 國子助教, later Wénlín láng 文林郎, Hànlín dàizhì 翰林待制, and eventually Lǐbù lángzhōng 禮部郎中. During the Zhèngtǒng / Zhìzhèng period of Yuán imperial decline (late 1340s–1350s), Wú Dāng was dispatched as Jiāngxī xíngshěng cānzhèng 江西行省參政 to suppress the Red Turban risings in Jiāngxī; he resisted Chén Yǒuliàng 陳友諒 and was eventually captured, refused to surrender, and died in confinement around 1361. Yuánshǐ j. 187 gives the standard biography (appended to his grandfather’s biography in juàn 171 and supplemented here).
Editorial role. Editor of his grandfather Wú Chéng’s Wú Wénzhèng jí KR4d0446 in 100 juàn; the surviving Yǒnglè 1406 re-cut by Wú Guàn 吳爟 (Wú Chéng’s fifth-generation descendant) preserves Wú Dāng’s editorial arrangement.
