Lǚ Wàng 呂望 — better known as Jiāng Shàng 姜尚, Tàigōng Wàng 太公望, or Jiāng Zǐyá 姜子牙 — was the legendary chief military strategist of King Wén 文 and King Wǔ 武 of Zhōu, central to the Zhōu founding (ca. 1046 BCE). His traditional dates are conventionally 1100–1015 BCE, but historicity is contested. Founder of the state of Qí 齊. Traditional author of the Liù tāo 六韜 (KR3b0002) — the canonical military classic — and Tàigōng 太公 in the Hàn shū yìwén zhì. The received Liù tāo is universally regarded as a much later compilation (Warring States or Hàn) attributed to Tàigōng under the standard pre-Qín pseudepigraphic convention.
