Zhōulǐ 周理 (Chèyōng Zhōulǐ 徹庸周理)

Late-Míng Línjì-lineage Chán master of the Yúnnán regional Chán community. Yīchè 一徹 (“Single-Thorough”); earlier hào Chèróng 徹融 (“Thoroughly-Melting”), later revised to Chèyōng 徹庸 (“Thoroughly-Ordinary”); shì Mèngān 夢庵 (“Dream Hermitage”). Lay name Dù Huìjiǔ 杜慧九. Native of Yúnnánxiàn 雲南縣 (modern Xiángyún 祥雲, Yúnnán). Lifedates 1591–1647 (died Yǒnglì 1 = 1647 of the Southern Míng, age 57, per the Yí nián lù 疑年錄 p. 395; alternative death-date 1636 per Jìng shí dī rǔ jí 徑石滴乳集 juan 4).

Tonsured at 11 at Jīzúshān Dàjuésì 鷄足山大覺寺 (Yúnnán) under Biànzhōu héshàng 徧周和尚. Initial awakening through Guānyīn-name chanting. Further Chán guidance from Mìzàngkāi 密藏開 (Mìzàng Dàokāi) of Jiāxīng-Canon fame. After study at various monasteries outside Yúnnán, received dharma-transmission from Lǎngmù Běnzhì 朗目本智 (1556–1606; DILA variously gives Mìyún Yuánwù 密雲圓悟 as an additional dharma-giver). Returned to Jīzúshān as abbot of Miàofēngsì 妙峰寺, where he taught for the remainder of his life.
