Zhōu Shùnchāng 周順昌 (1584–1626), zì Jǐngwén 景文, hào Liǎozhōu 蓼州, posthumous title Zhōngjiè 忠介, was a late-Míng Dōnglín martyr from Wúxiàn 吳縣 (Sūzhōu). He passed the jìnshì in Wànlì guǐchǒu 萬曆癸丑 = 1613 and rose to Lìbù wénxuǎn sī lángzhōng 吏部文選司郎中 (Director of the Bureau of Civil Service Selection within the Ministry of Personnel). In 1626 he was arrested by Wèi Zhōngxián 魏忠賢’s eunuch faction; his arrest at Sūzhōu triggered the famous Wǔrén bēi 五人碑 incident — five townsmen (Yán Pèiwéi 顏佩韋, Yáng Niànrú 楊念如, Mǎ Jié 馬傑, Shěn Yáng 沈揚, Zhōu Wényuán 周文元) attacked the jǐnyīwèi arresting officers and were executed; this episode was the subject of Zhāng Pǔ 張溥’s celebrated Wǔrénmù bēijì 五人墓碑記. Zhōu was taken to Beijing and tortured to death in prison. He was posthumously honored Zhōngjiè at the start of Chóngzhēn. His main biography is in Míng shǐ j. 245. The Zhōngjiè jìnyú jí (KR4e0233) is the recovered remnant of his writings, gathered by his son Zhōu Màolán 周茂蘭 and grandson Zhōu Jìng 周靖 (cf. 周靖) — the original manuscripts were destroyed at the moment of his arrest.
