Late-Qīng lay Buddhist of Yángzhōu (Jiāngdū 江都); religious style Zhǐguān 咫觀, layman’s name Zhèng Yìngfáng 鄭應房, courtesy name Sìqīng 駟卿, late sobriquet Qiěwēng 且翁 (DILA A000820). Lifedates not securely preserved; he was the father of the Pure-Land monk Miàokōng fǎshī 妙空法師 (1826–1880; DILA gives the corrupt “1926-1880” but this should read 1826-1880), and according to his own Xiūxī wénjiàn lù 修西聞見錄 (X1552, juan 3) he died at age 71 at the Mílèdiàn 彌勒殿 of Jīyuán 雞園 in Yángzhōu, where he resided with his son. His floruit therefore lies in the second and third quarters of the 19th century. Described in the Xiūxī wénjiàn lù as cautious in temperament, devoted to lineage, and an able writer of running-script and old- and recent-style poetry; in his later years he gave up wine and meat, kept rigorous Buddhist (recitation routines) and read sūtras assiduously, “without yet realising the ultimate truth, yet knowing it in his heart.” His three surviving works in the Xùzàngjīng are:

  • Fǎjiè shèngfán shuǐlù dàzhāi pǔlì dàochǎng xìngxiàng tōnglùn (KR6k0205, X1498) — doctrinal treatise on the Shuǐlù mass.
  • Fǎjiè shèngfán shuǐlù dàzhāi fǎlún bǎochàn (KR6k0206, X1499) — companion liturgy.
  • Xiūxī wénjiàn lù 修西聞見錄 (X1552) — Pure-Land miracle-tale collection.
