Mù’ān Shànqīng 睦庵善卿 (lifedates unrecorded; active late 11th and early 12th centuries), zì Shījié 師節, hào Mù’ān 睦庵 (“Harmonious Hermitage”). Northern Sòng Chán monk; compiler of the foundational Chán lexicographical work Zǔ tíng shì yuàn 祖庭事苑 (KR6q0152, X64 n1261, 8 juan).
Native of Dōngyuè 東越 (modern Zhèjiāng), lay surname Chén 陳. Entered monastic life as a youth as the disciple of the Kāiyuán Cíhuì 開元慈惠 master; travelled widely for Chán study. In the Yuánfú 元符 period (1098–1100), constrained by his aging mother’s need for filial care, he returned to his home region and resided in seclusion at a hermitage he called the Mù’ān 睦庵 — hence his hào. In Dàguān 2 (1108) spring was resident at the Dōngjīng Huáyán sì 京都華嚴寺, completed the Zǔ tíng shì yuàn, and obtained Fǎyīng’s 法英 preface.
The Zǔ tíng shì yuàn is the first major Chinese Buddhist lexicographical-exegetical work specifically devoted to Chán technical vocabulary, and became the canonical philological reference for the classical Chán yǔlù tradition. Its treatment of Chán terms — tracing them to Buddhist or secular-Chinese sources, with etymological and contextual explanations — set the template for all subsequent Chinese Buddhist lexicographical work.
Works in the Kanripo corpus: KR6q0152 Zǔ tíng shì yuàn only.
