Guāntāo Dàqí 觀濤大奇 (1625/26–1678), Guāntāo 觀濤. Late-Míng / early-Qīng Cáodòng Chán master of the Shòuchāng 壽昌 sub-branch; dharma-heir of Juélàng Dàoshèng 道盛 覺浪道盛 (1593–1659). Native of Wèichuānlǐ 渭川里 in Yúnlín 雲林, Fǔzhōu 撫州 (Jiāngxī), lay surname Péng 彭. At nineteen he tired of the world and sought monastic formation under Xiàngshān 項山; then trained with Tiěsuǒ lǎorén of Ráoshān 瀘陽饒山鐵索老人, and took the full precepts at the Lónghú 龍湖 ordination-altar in Shàowǔ 邵武. He shut himself in closed-retreat at Juéxiānfēng 覺僊峰 (Xū 旴), investigating the Liùzǔ tánjīng 六祖壇經 phrase “bùsī shàn, bùsī è” 不思善不思惡 / “nàgè shì Míng shàngzuò běnlái miànmù” 那個是明上座本來面目, and had a major opening. After a further pilgrimage to various masters he met Dàoshèng at Tiānjiè and received formal dharma-transmission. His principal abbacies were at Chóngxiān Xiǎnxiàosì 崇先顯孝寺 at Gāotíngshān 皋亭山 (Hángzhōu) — whence he figures in catalogue signatures as Chóngxiān Dàqí — and at Xīnchéng Shòuchāngsì 新城壽昌寺 (the ancestral seat of the Shòuchāng branch). He died on Kāngxī 17.7.10 (26 August 1678), aged 54, with 35 dharma-years. His dharma-heir was Xīngquán 興泉 of Qíyuán 淇園 at Hángzhōu Gāotíngshān Xiǎnxiàosì. He is listed as co-editor (děng biān 等編) of his master’s Tiānjiè Juélàng Shèng chánshī yǔlù (KR6q0399, J25 B174) with the senior heir Dàchéng 大成. His own yǔlù is preserved as KR6q0499 《觀濤奇禪師語錄》 6 juan, Jiāxīng Canon J36 B362, compiled by fǎsì Xīngshū 興舒 děng biān; juan 6 includes the Shòuzàngmíng 壽藏銘 that gives his lifedates.
