Dàxīn 大訢 (Xiàoyǐn Dàxīn 笑隱大訢)

The dominant Yuán-period Chán master of the imperial court — senior abbot of the Lóngxiáng 龍翔 monastery in the capital, institutional shìjiāo zōngzhǔ 釋教宗主 (“Head of Buddhist Schools”) under Yuán imperial patronage. Imperial title: Guǎngzhì Quánwù Dàchánshī 廣智全悟大禪師 (“Great Chán-Master of Vast Wisdom and Perfect Awakening”). Hào Xiàoyǐn 笑隱 (“Laughing Recluse”). Lifedates 1284–1344.

Dàxīn occupied the culminating position of the Yuán dynasty’s Chán-imperial relationship. His institutional role as Shìjiāo Zōngzhǔ gave him authority over Buddhist institutional matters across the empire; through his preface-endorsements on works like KR6q0179 Zhèng dào gē zhù by Zhúyuán Yǒngshèng (1340) he extended imperial-legitimating recognition to regional Chán masters.

Principal surviving Kanripo-canonical contribution: the Xiàoyǐn Dàxīn chánshī yǔlù 笑隱大訢禪師語錄 KR6q0301 in 4 juan, compiled by four of his ménrén disciples. Also preface-writer for multiple Yuán Chán texts including KR6q0179.
