Miàokōngzǐ 妙空子
A late-Qīng lay-Buddhist (jūshì 居士) Pure Land scholar active in the Tóngzhì 同治 era (1862–1874). The studio designation Bǎichéng yānshuǐ zhī jū 百城煙水之居 (“Hundred-Cities-Mist-and-Water Dwelling”) that appears in the colophon of his principal work suggests an itinerant or scholarly self-conception drawing on the Huáyán 華嚴 imagery of Sudhana’s pilgrimage through one hundred and ten cities. Author of the 《蓮邦消息》 Liánbāng xiāoxī KR6p0112 (X1193) — a doctrinal Pure Land treatise organised in ten pǐn (chapters), framing the zhēnxīn běntǐ / yīniàn wúmíng dialectic of the Qǐxìn lùn into a soteriological account of niànfó practice. Lifedates and lay name not preserved.
