Northern Sòng / Jīn-transition Buddhist scholar-monk and Yogācāra-school kēwén 科文 (structural-outline) editor. Lay surname Jiǎ 賈, native of Gǎochéng 藁城 (in modern Hébei). Born 1064; died Jīn Tiānhuì 5 (1127), aged 64.
He took ordination as a child at his parents’ direction at the Císhìyuàn 慈氏院 of Lóngxīngsì 龍興寺 in Zhēndìng 真定, where he received the Maitreyan (císhì) tradition’s transmission. During the Yuányòu era (1086–1094) the Northern Sòng court conferred on him the honorific Tōngzhào Dàshī 通照大師 (“Master of Penetrating Illumination”). He was successively abbot at Lóngxīngsì in Xíngzhōu 邢州 and at Chóngfǎyuàn 崇法院 within Kāiyuánsì 開元寺 of Běnfǔ 本府 (the latter his final residence; in his self-designations he uses Húyáng 滹陽 as his geographic styling).
His distinctive scholarly contribution is a corpus of kēwén 科文 — tabular structural outlines — for Yogācāra and Wèishí school commentaries, including the present Bōrě xīnjīng yōuzàn tiāngǎi kē 般若心經幽贊添改科 (X524 = KR6c0144), which revises and supplements an earlier kēwén of Kuíjī’s Yōuzàn (T1710), and a kēwén on the Shàngshēng jīng ruìyìng 上生經瑞應 (X393).
He represents the Northern Sòng / Jīn-transition revival of Yogācāra-school scholasticism in north China, working within the surviving Cí’ēn-school tradition at the major Hébei monasteries shortly before the Jīn conquest disrupted northern Buddhist institutional life.
