Puṇyatara 弗若多羅 (also 弗若多羅, d. 404 CE) was a Kashmiri vinayācārya of the Sarvāstivāda school. According to the Gāosēng zhuàn 高僧傳 (T50n2059) j. 2, he arrived at Cháng-ān 長安 in the late 4th century with the entire Sarvāstivāda Vinaya (Daśa-bhāṇavāra-vinaya, Shísòng lǜ 十誦律) memorised. Yáo Xīng 姚興 of the Later Qín 後秦 invited him to translate the text in 404 CE jointly with Kumārajīva (鳩摩羅什); but Puṇyatara died after reciting only two-thirds of the Vinaya. The remainder was completed by Dharmaruci 曇摩流支 and Kumārajīva, with Vimalākṣa 卑摩羅叉 (Kumārajīva’s Vinaya-teacher) providing the final redaction. The completed translation is the Shísòng lǜ (KR6k0016, T23n1435), the earliest of the four complete Chinese Vinayas.
