Hóngyī 弘一

Republican-era Chinese Buddhist monk, calligrapher, musician, and Vinaya-school revivalist. Lay name 李叔同 Lǐ Shūtóng — known before ordination as a major poet, painter, dramatist, and music educator. Tonsured in 1918 at age 38 at Hǔpàosì 虎跑寺 in Hángzhōu, adopting the dharma-name Hóngyī. Devoted his monastic career to reviving the Nánshān Vinaya school 南山律宗 and is widely venerated as one of the principal twentieth-century Chinese Buddhist masters.
