Early-Qīng grand councillor and senior Hànlín scholar, zì Sùcún 素存, of Dānyáng 丹陽 (modern Jiangsu). Granted jìnshì in Shùnzhì 18 (1661); rose through the Hànlín to Wénhuádiàn dàxuéshì and was for many years one of the Kāngxī Emperor’s principal advisors on literary matters. Posthumous title Wénzhēn 文貞. He was nominally chief editor (Zǒngyuèguān 總閱官) of the Yùdìng Kāngxī zìdiǎn KR1j0048 commissioned in 1710, but he was already in failing health when the project began and died the following year (1711) — the bulk of the editorial work was done by the team of 28 zuǎnxiūguān (compilers) over the next five years. Zhāng was also a leading editor of the Pèiwén yùnfǔ 佩文韻府, the Yuānjiàn lèihán 淵鑑類函, and many other Kāngxī imperial reference works. CBDB lifedates 1642–1711, in agreement with the standard biographical sources.
