Late Táng 唐 / Five Dynasties 五代 Daoist scholar, compiler of the twenty-juàn Dàodé jīng commentary-compendium [[KR5c0099|Dàodé zhēn jīng xuán dé zuǎn shū]] 道德真經玄德纂疏 (DZ 711) — one of the most important anthologies for the reconstruction of pre-Sòng Lǎozǐ commentary.
Activity period. Late 9th century. The Dù Guāngtíng-attributed preface to DZ 711 states that Qiáng Sīqí “lived at the end of the ninth century” (jiǔ shì jì mò 九世紀末, paraphrasing Dù’s statement). Beyond this general chronological marker, no precise lifedates are recorded.
Regional affiliation. Most probably active in Shǔ 蜀 (Sìchuān) — the same region that produced 杜光庭 Dù Guāngtíng (850–933) and where the late-Táng Daoist intellectual tradition flourished under the QiánShǔ 前蜀 kingdom. The preface’s attribution to Dù Guāngtíng implies close association.
Works. The Dàodé zhēn jīng xuán dé zuǎn shū (DZ 711, 20 juàn) is Qiáng Sīqí’s sole substantial surviving work. As a compiler, he:
- Collected commentaries from Táng Xuánzōng (commentary + subcommentary), Héshàng gōng, Yán Zūn, Lǐ Róng 李榮, and Chéng Xuányīng 成玄英.
- Added his own analytical glosses — providing the “second part” of the two-part title-glosses in each chapter (see KR5c0099).
- Preserved lost material — especially substantial portions of Yán Zūn’s, Lǐ Róng’s, and Chéng Xuányīng’s otherwise-lost commentaries.
Philosophical orientation. Apparently a late-Táng Chóngxuán 重玄 scholar, in the tradition of Chéng Xuányīng and the early-Táng metaphysical Daoists. His preservation of Chéng Xuányīng’s commentary — and his own analytical glosses that develop similar themes — place him firmly in the Chóngxuán lineage.
Historical significance. Qiáng Sīqí’s compilation is one of the indispensable documents for the reconstruction of pre-Sòng Lǎozǐ commentary. Without DZ 711, substantial portions of Yán Zūn, Lǐ Róng, and Chéng Xuányīng would be entirely lost. The recovery of these commentators — made possible by Qiáng Sīqí’s editorial labour — is one of the major scholarly achievements of the twentieth-century Daoist textual-historical tradition.
Dating. Late 9th century (fl. c. 880–904). No lifedates. No CBDB record identified.
Disambiguation. Not to be confused with other Táng-era figures of the rare surname 強 Qiáng; this is a distinct figure not otherwise documented outside the DZ 711 compilation.
