Xú Gàn 徐幹 (170–217), Wěicháng 偉長, was a native of Bei-hǎi 北海 Jùxiàn 劇縣 and one of the so-called Jiàn’ān qīzǐ 建安七子 — the seven literary masters at Cáo Cāo’s headquarters in the late Hàn — together with Kǒng Róng 孔融, Chén Lín 陳琳, Wáng Càn 王粲, Ruǎn Yǔ 阮瑀, Yīng Yáng 應瑒 and Liú Zhēn 劉楨. He served Cáo Cāo’s headquarters as Jìjiǔ yuàn of the Sīkōng Bureau (司空軍謀祭酒掾) and concurrently Wǔguānjiàng wénxué 五官將文學 (literary attendant to Cáo Pī’s military office). He died in the Jiàn’ān 22 (217) plague that also killed Wáng Càn, Liú Zhēn and others. Although his association is closely with the proto-Wèi court, by the SKQS tíyào’s strict chronology he is to be treated as a Hàn figure (Wèi did not formally receive the abdication until 220, three years after Xú’s death). His major work Zhōng lùn 中論 (KR3a0012) is preserved; his and shī survive in fragments. CBDB has 徐幹 (id 242486) without dates.
