Déyī 德一 (J. Tokuitsu)
Early Heian-period Japanese Hossō 法相 (Yogācāra) master (c. 749–c. 824), based in Aizu and the Eastern provinces. Famous as the principal Hossō interlocutor of 最澄 Saichō in the Sanichi gonjitsu ronsō 三一權實論諍 (“debate over the provisional / real status of the three vehicles and one vehicle”) of c. 817–822, the foundational Lotus-school / Hossō doctrinal controversy in pre-Esoteric Japanese Buddhism. Tokuitsu’s Busshō shō 佛性抄 and related polemics defended the Hossō gotra doctrine of differentiated Buddhist destinies against the Tendai ekayāna universalism articulated by Saichō.
