Late Southern-Sòng Tiāntái historian-monk and ritualist; lifedates not preserved (DILA A000502). Style Dàshí 大石 (“Great Stone”), with the further sobriquets Yuèbō 月波 (“Moon-on-Waves”) and Dōnghú 東湖 (after his residence). Dharma-heir of Wúzhù Zōngjìng fǎshī 無住宗淨法師. Tonsured at Sìmíng Fúquán 四明福泉, he then settled at Dōnghúsì 東湖寺 in Níngbō (Sìmíng 四明), where he produced two major works: the Fózǔ tǒngjì 佛祖統紀, the standard 54-fascicle Tiāntái-perspective universal Buddhist history (its self-preface dated Xiánchún 5 = 1269; T49n2035 / KR6r0012), and the present Fǎjiè shèngfán shuǐlù shènghuì xiūzhāi yíguǐ (KR6k0204, X1497), the standard liturgical handbook for the Shuǐlù mass. A third work attributed to him, the Zōngmén zūnzǔ yí 宗門尊祖儀, does not survive. He is described in later gazetteers as widely-read and elegantly-written, with a polemical eye for distinguishing legitimate Tiāntái transmission from rival lineages.
