Xìngchéng 性澄 / Zhàntáng Xìngchéng 湛堂性澄 (1265–1342)

A leading Yuán-period Tiāntái master, hào Zhàntáng 湛堂 (“Hall of Tranquillity”) and Yuèxī 越溪 (“Yuè-stream”) — the latter from the Yuè 越 (Shàoxīng) region in Zhèjiāng. He is one of the principal restorers of Tiāntái doctrine in the Yuán dynasty and the immediate teacher of Wúxìn Tiānrú Wéizé 無心天如惟則, the Yuán Pure Land master whose Jìngtǔ huòwèn 淨土或問 KR6p0053 is one of the standard Yuán Pure Land texts. Native of Yuè 越 (Shàoxīng); ordained at Tiāntáishān 天台山 (the school’s home mountain) and held the abbacy of Yánqìngyuàn 延慶院 in Sìmíng 四明 (Níngbō) — the same temple where 知禮 Sìmíng Zhīlǐ had taught — and later of Hùshèngsì 護聖寺 in Hangzhou. Lifedates 1265–1342, age 78. Alternative writings of his style include 越溪澄 (Yuèxī Chéng) used in KR6p0016 Ēmítuó jīng jùjiě 阿彌陀經句解.

His major writings include the Tiāntái sìjiào yí jízhù 天台四教儀集註 (a standard Yuán-period commentary on Dìguān 諦觀’s late-Tang Tiāntái compendium, widely used in late-imperial Tiāntái pedagogy and re-cut as a teaching text in early-Edo Japan), the Ēmítuó jīng jùjiě 阿彌陀經句解 KR6p0016 (his sentence-by-sentence commentary on the smaller Pure Land sūtra), and a number of records and sermons preserved in the Bùjì sēngshǐ luè 補續僧史略 and Shì shì jīgǔ lüè 釋氏稽古略.

His Pure Land doctrine combines the Tiāntái yīxīnsānguān 一心三觀 framework of Sìmíng Zhīlǐ with the late-Sòng / Yuán emphasis on lay-Buddhist devotional practice; he is one of the principal figures in the transmission of Tiāntái Pure Land into the YuánMíng period.
