Wéizé 惟則

Yuán-dynasty Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, hào Tiānrú 天如 (“Heaven-Like”). Posthumously styled Fóxīn Pǔjì Wénhuì Dàbiàn chánshī 佛心普濟文慧大辯禪師. Per DILA: 1286 – Zhìzhèng 14 (1354), shì 69. Native of Jíānlù 吉安路 (Jiāngxī).

Principal dharma-heir of 明本 Zhōngfēng Míngběn (1263–1323); thus in the Xuěyán → Gāofēng → Zhōngfēng → Tiānrú arc that is the central current of late-Yuán Chán. Founded Shīzǐlín 獅子林 (“Lion Grove”) at Sūzhōu, one of the most famous Chán institutions of the YuánMíng era and a surviving classical garden today. Recorded sayings: Tiānrú Wéizé chánshī yǔlù (KR6q0336), 9 juan, compiled by his xiǎoshī 善遇 Shànyù. His other signal work is the Jìngtǔ huòwèn 淨土或問, a Chán-style apologetic for Pure Land practice that continued Zhōngfēng’s integrative program and shaped late-Míng Pure-Land-Chán apologetic.
