Huìrán 慧然

Táng-dynasty Chán monk of the Línjì school, usually called Sānshèng Huìrán 三聖慧然 after his residence at the Sānshèng Yuàn 三聖院 in Zhènzhōu 鎮州 (present-day Héběi). Native place and exact lifedates are not transmitted. A direct heir (fǎsì 法嗣) of Línjì Yìxuán 臨濟義玄 (義玄), he received his master’s fùzhǔ 付囑 to compile the master’s recorded sayings — the received Zhènzhōu Línjì Huìzhào chánshī yǔlù 鎮州臨濟慧照禪師語錄 (KR6q0053) is traditionally attributed to him, though its transmitted form is a Northern-Sòng (1120) editorial recension by Yuánjué Zōngyǎn 圓覺宗演. After Línjì’s death Huìrán is recorded as travelling widely, calling on Yǎngshān Huìjí 仰山慧寂, Déshān Xuānjiàn 德山宣鑒, and Xuěfēng Yìcún 雪峰義存.
