Huáidí 懷迪
Mid-Táng Buddhist scholar-monk; one of the four collators of the original Tang translation of the Mahāvaipulya-pūrṇa-buddha-sūtra (Śūraṃgama-sūtra) at Guǎngzhōu in Shén-lóng 1 / 705 CE. Floruit late seventh – early eighth centuries. Native of Xún-zhōu 循州 (Guǎngdōng); learned in Sanskrit (fàn-yán 梵言) through long contact with the Indian and Western-region monks resident in Guǎngzhōu. Per the canonical translation colophon to the Lèngyán, the translation team consisted of Pramiti (般剌蜜諦) as the lead translator, Mégha (Mí-jiā Shì-jiā 彌伽釋迦) as the verbal interpreter, Fáng Róng 房融 as the bǐ-shòu 筆受 / brush-receiver, and Huái-dí as the zhèng-yì 證譯 (verifier-translator). The textual evidence preserved in the Yì-hǎi (KR6j0727) and various Sòng-period catalogs identifies Huái-dí as the principal scholarly authority on the Tang-period state of the Lèngyán text.
