Típósèmó 提婆設摩 (Skt. Devaśarman “Protected by the Gods”; Chinese calque 天寂 Tiānjì; DILA Authority A001208) was an early Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma master to whom the Vijñāna-kāya-pāda (識身足論, KR6l0004, T1539) is traditionally attributed. His dates are unknown; modern scholars like Frauwallner (1995) place him among the earliest Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma authors, possibly in the first two centuries CE. The Vijñāna-kāya is notable for its early polemic against the Pudgalavāda (Personalist) school’s doctrine of an indeterminate self, suggesting Devaśarman was active during an early phase of Buddhist inter-sectarian debate. Nothing further is known of his biography.
