Mid-to-late-Northern-Sòng painter, poet, and prefect, Yǔkě 與可, hào Xiàoxiào jūshì 笑笑居士 (and conventionally referred to in Sòng bǐjì as Wén Húzhōu 文湖州 from his last office). Posthumous Xiào 孝. Of Zǐzhōu Yǒngtài xiàn Xīnxìng xiāng 梓州永泰縣新興鄉 (modern Yántíng xiàn, Sìchuān). First cousin once removed of Sū Shì 蘇軾 (their mothers’ families connected). Jìnshì of Huángyòu 1 / 1049 in the same examination as Wáng Ānshí. Held provincial zhīzhōu posts at Yángzhōu, Língzhōu, Yuánzhōu; died en route to Húzhōu (his final appointment) in Yuánfēng 2 / 1079 age 62 at Chénzhōu’s lodging. The founding figure of the wénrénhuà 文人畫 (literati-painting) tradition: his mòzhú 墨竹 (“ink bamboo”) paintings — particularly the Yúndānggǔ yànzhú — taken by Sū Shì and Mǐ Fú as the model of literati visual aesthetics. The proverb xiōng yǒu chéng zhú 胸有成竹 originates with Sū Shì’s tribute to Wén’s painting method. Mùzhìmíng by Fàn Bǎilù 范百祿 (preserved at the head of KR4d0048).
