Wén Zhènmèng 文震孟 (1574–1636), zì Wénqǐ 文起, hào Zhànchí 湛持, posthumous title Wénsù 文肅. Native of Chángzhōu 長洲 (Sūzhōu). Great-grandson of the famous painter and calligrapher Wén Zhēngmíng 文徵明 (1470–1559); elder brother of the painter Wén Zhènhēng 文震亨. Tiānqǐ 2 / rénxū (1622) zhuàngyuán (first-place jìnshì) at the age of forty-nine; rose to Lǐbù zuǒ shìláng jiān Dōnggé dàxuéshì (Vice Minister of Rites concurrently Grand Secretary of the Eastern Pavilion) in Chóngzhēn 8 / 1635, though his tenure as Grand Secretary lasted only weeks before he was forced from office by Wēn Tǐrén 溫體仁. He was an outspoken opponent of Wèi Zhōngxián during the Tiānqǐ persecution and was sympathetically aligned with the Dōnglín faction. His preface to the Ní Wénzhēn jí (KR4e0240) was written for an earlier Dàiyán xuǎn 代言選 of the zhìcí (drafting-edicts) work of 倪元璐 from Ní’s Hànlín period. (The WYG tiyao notes him as ‘of Chángshā’ 長沙, a slip for ‘Chángzhōu’ 長洲 — clearly a copyist’s miscopy, here flagged but not silently corrected.) CBDB 34682. Míngshǐ j. 251.
