Mid-ninth-century esoteric Buddhist translator and ācārya active at the Dàxīngshàn Monastery 大興善寺 in Cháng’ān 長安. According to the DILA Buddhist Studies Person Authority and Zànníng’s 贊寧 Sòng gāosēng zhuàn 宋高僧傳 (T50n2061), his lay surname was Dīng 丁 and he hailed from Wànnián 萬年 in Jīngzhào 京兆 (the metropolitan region around the Tang capital). The XML record gives Wànnián as native place but his more usual designation is 京兆杜陵.
He performed the Mahāmaṇḍala (大曼拏羅) ritual during the Dàzhōng era 大中 (847–860) and was consecrated as ācārya. In Dàzhōng 9 (855), at Dàxīngshàn Monastery, he transmitted the secret essentials of the two Maṇḍalas and the newly translated Chí niàn jīng fǎ 持念經法 to the Japanese Tendai pilgrim Enchin 圓珍 (Jp. Chishō Daishi); in Xiántōng 2 (861) he sent further texts to Enchin in Japan. Under Yìzōng (Xiántōng era) he was granted the title Biànjué Dàshī 遍覺大師, and Xīzōng posthumously honoured him as Pǔzhào Dàshī 普照大師, with stūpa Zhānghuà 彰化.
His attested translations include the Bōrě bōluómìduō xīn jīng 般若波羅蜜多心經 (Heart Sūtra, T254 = KR6c0131) and the Móhē fèishìluó mònàyě típó hēluóshé tuóluóní yíguǐ 摩訶吠室囉末那野提婆喝囉闍陀羅尼儀軌, each in one fascicle; he also composed the Fófǎ gēnběn 佛法根本, the Shèng huānxǐtiān shìfǎ 聖歡喜天式法, the Míng fófǎ gēnběn bēi 明佛法根本碑, and the Shìjiào zhǐguī 示教指歸. His transmission to Enchin makes him an important node in the Tang–Heian esoteric lineage. Death year and age unknown.
