Dharmagatayaśas 曇摩伽陀耶舍 (also written 曇摩迦陀耶舍), fifth-century Indic translator. Sanskrit: Dharmagatayaśas (“Fame-of-the-Course-of-Dharma”); Chinese gloss Fǎ-shēng-chēng 法生稱 (“Dharma-Born Praise” — possibly a reading of Dharma-jaha-yaśas). DILA Authority A001839. Native of central India.
Active in the Southern Qí 蕭齊 court translation bureau under Gāo-dì 高帝. In Jiàn-yuán 建元 3 (= 481 CE), at the Cháo-tíng-sì 朝亭寺 in Guǎng-zhōu 廣州, translated the Wú-liàng-yì jīng 無量義經 (KR6d0118, T9n0276, 1 juan) — the principal Indic Mahāyāna scripture of the Wú-liàng-yì / Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-prefatory tradition. The translation-receiver was the śramaṇa Huì-biǎo 慧表. In Yǒng-míng 永明 3 (485 CE), Dharmagatayaśas brought the Wú-liàng-yì jīng to Yáng-dū 揚都 (Jiànkāng), where it was widely propagated.
Excellent in Chinese clerical-script (lìshū 隸書) calligraphy. Other biographical details and his lifedates are not preserved.
