曇摩跋檀

Tánmóbátán 曇摩跋檀 (Skt. Dharmabhadanta?; fl. 394 CE), Indian Abhidharma master active at Kucha 龜茲 under Lǚ Guāng’s Hòu-Liáng 後涼 administration. According to the closing colophon of the Chēngyáng zhū fó gōngdé jīng 稱揚諸佛功德經 (KR6i0010), he first rendered the Sanskrit vorlage into Tokharian (the Kucha vernacular, 龜茲語) on the 20th day of the 6th month of Línjiā 麟嘉 6 (394 CE) at the Jīnhuácí 金華祠 shrine in Kucha; 慧海 Huìhǎi then translated his Tokharian draft into Chinese. The episode is one of the very few attested cases of a Tokharian intermediary stage in the Sanskrit-to-Chinese transmission of a sūtra.
