Dharmamitra 曇無蜜多 / 曇摩蜜多 (“Dharma-Friend”), Liú-Sòng-period meditation-master and translator. Sanskrit: Dharmamitra. DILA Authority A001786. Honorifics: Liánméi chánshī 連眉禪師 (“Joined-Eyebrows Meditation Master,” from his distinctive features), Fǎyǒu 法友 (“Dharma-Friend”). Native of Kashmir 罽賓. Born 356; died 442 in southern China, aged 87.
In youth took monastic ordination and devoted himself to meditation; travelled to Khotan, Liángzhōu, and eventually to southern China. Reached Jiànkāng in Yuánjiā 元嘉 1 (424); resided at the Qíyuánsì 祇洹寺 and other monasteries in the LiúSòng capital. Translated several major Mahāyāna sūtras including:
- Fóshuō Guān Pǔxián púsà xíngfǎ jīng 佛說觀普賢菩薩行法經 (KR6d0120, T277) — the Sūtra on the Practice of Contemplating Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, the standard Tiāntái epilogue text to the Lotus Sūtra (“the third part of the Three-Part Lotus”: Wúliàngyì + Fǎhuá + Pǔxián guān).
- Guān Wúliàngshòu Fó jīng 觀無量壽佛經 (T365, the Amitāyurdhyānasūtra) — the principal Pure Land contemplation-sūtra.
- Guān Xūkōngzàng púsà jīng 觀虛空藏菩薩經 (T409).
