Tánzhào 曇照 (lifedates unknown, fl. mid-Northern Sòng), Sòng-dynasty Tiāntāi 天台 monk of the Sìmíng 四明 (Níngbō) establishment, also designated 四明曇照 (“Tánzhào of Sìmíng”) and 方廣曇照 (“Tánzhào of Fāngguǎng[-sì]”). He stands within the lineage of Sìmíng Zhīlǐ 四明知禮 (960–1028) — the dominant Shānjiā 山家 patriarch of the Northern-Sòng Tiāntāi revival.
He is the author of the 《天台智者大師別傳註》 Tiāntāi zhìzhě dàshī biézhuàn zhù (KR6r0069, X77 no. 1535), a 2-juan annotated commentary on Guàndǐng 灌頂’s biography of Zhìyǐ — the Suí Tiāntāi Zhìzhě dàshī biézhuàn (T2050). Tánzhào’s commentary is the principal Sòng exegesis of the Tiāntāi school’s foundation-narrative and the standard Sòng-Tiāntāi reading of Zhìyǐ’s life. Per DILA Buddhist Person Authority A001790.
He is to be distinguished from the Táng monk Báiyún Tánzhào 白雲曇照 (DILA A019938) and from the Yuán-Míng homonym Tánzhào.
