Xiǎoyuè 曉月 (fl. mid 11th c.), Northern-Song Chán master of the Lètánshān 泐潭山 monastic tradition (in modern Jiāngxī), known by the appellation Lètán Chánshī 泐潭禪師. He is named in the colophon of KR6m0042 Zhàolùn shū kē 肇論疏科 (X868) as the editor and structural arranger of the Zhàolùn shū kēwén — a kēwén 科文 (structural-outline) treatment of the KR6m0038 Zhào lùn — and in the colophon of KR6m0043 Jiākē Zhàolùn xù zhù 夾科肇論序注 (X869) as the annotator of the same.
Xiǎoyuè’s biographical record is fragmentary. He was associated with the Lètánshān Yúnménzōng 雲門宗 lineage of Northern-Song Chán Buddhism and was a contemporary of the great Yúnménzōng masters of the Bāofēng Wéizhāo 寶峰惟照 (1085–1155) generation. The kēwén and zhù genres in which Xiǎoyuè worked are characteristic of Northern-Song Chán-school doctrinal-commentarial literature: the kē breaks the source-text into structural divisions; the zhù supplies brief inline glosses. Xiǎoyuè’s Zhàolùn commentaries are the principal Northern-Song Chán-school engagement with Sēngzhào’s tradition.
Works in the Kanripo corpus: KR6m0042 Zhàolùn shū kē 肇論疏科 (X868); KR6m0043 Jiākē Zhàolùn xù zhù 夾科肇論序注 (X869).
