Xiǎoyíng 曉瑩 (lifedates uncertain, fl. 1140s–1160s), Southern-Sòng Línjì 楊岐 Chán master; Zhòngwēn 仲溫, hào Yúnwò 雲臥 (“Cloud-Recliner”), also designated Gǎnshān Xiǎoyíng 感山曉瑩 (from his early residency at Gǎnshān 感山). Native of Jiāngxī. Dharma-heir of the great Línjì master Dàhuì Zōnggǎo 大慧宗杲 (1089–1163); seventeenth-generation in the Dàjiàn 大鑑 (Huìnéng) lineage.

After many years of travel through the Chán monasteries (lìyóu cónglín 歷游叢林), in his old age Xiǎoyíng retired to the Luóhú 羅湖 (“Net Lake”) at Línchuān 臨川 in Jiāngxī, building a hermit’s hall called Húyǐntáng 湖隱堂 (“Hall of Lakeside Reclusion”), where he composed his two principal works:

  • 《雲臥紀談》 Yúnwò jìtán (KR6r0093, X86 no. 1610, 2 juan) — a “talks of the Cloud-Recliner” anecdote-collection focused on the lives of contemporary Chán masters and the doctrinal debates of the late Sòng;

  • 《羅湖野錄》 Luóhú yělù (KR6r0092, X83 no. 1577, 2 juan) — a “wilderness records of Net Lake” collection of monastery-anecdote, gāngshàn 綱善 sermon-notes, fragmentary inscriptions and pertinent correspondence among Chán figures of the late Sòng. The Luóhú yělù is one of the so-called “seven books of the Chán gate” (chánmén qībù shū 禪門七部書).

Both works are dated by the Fózǔ tǒngjì and the Fózǔ lìdài tōngzǎi to Shàoxīng 紹興 25 (1155). Per DILA Buddhist Person Authority A001777.

Works in the Kanripo corpus: KR6r0092 Luóhú yělù; KR6r0093 Yúnwò jìtán.
