Cáo Xuéquán 曹學佺 (1573–1646), zì Néngshǐ 能始, hào Yànshí 雁石, also Xīfēng jūshì 西峰居士 and Shícāng 石倉; native of Hóuguān 侯官 (modern Fúzhōu) in Fújiàn. Late-Míng polymath, official, scholar of the Yìjīng and Shàngshū, anthologist, and Míng-loyalist martyr. Wànlì 23 (1595) jìnshì. Held office as Hànlín jiǎntǎo; sent out as Sìchuān yòu cānzhèng and promoted Sìchuān àncháshǐ ca. 1605–1611, during which he composed the Shǔzhōng guǎngjì 蜀中廣記 (KR2k0126) and the QuánShǔ yìwénzhì 全蜀藝文志. After dismissal in 1612 he returned to Fúzhōu and devoted himself to scholarship and the patronage of the Mǐnzhōng poetic circle. One of the leading lights of the late-Míng Dōnglín / Fùshè movement. Recalled to office under the Hóngguāng court (1644) as Lǐbù shìláng; under the Lóngwǔ court at Fúzhōu as Lǐbù shàngshū; on the fall of Fúzhōu to Qīng forces in Lóngwǔ 2 (1646) he hanged himself rather than serve. Major works include the Yìjīng tōnglùn (KR1a0103?), the Shǔzhōng guǎngjì (KR2k0126), the Mǐnzhōng zhì 閩中志, and the monumental 506-juan Shícāng lìdài shī xuǎn 石倉歷代詩選 (KR4h0008?), one of the largest of all Míng poetry anthologies.
