Lǐ Liúfāng 李流芳 (1575–1629), zì Chánghéng 長蘅, hào Tányuán 檀園 (also Xiānghǎi 香海), was a late-Míng shīwénshūhuà (poetry-prose-calligraphy-painting) man of Jiādìng 嘉定 (Sūzhōu). He passed the jǔrén in Wànlì bǐngwǔ 萬曆丙午 = 1606, but failed three times in the metropolitan examination and, after the Wèi Zhōngxián 魏忠賢 eunuch dictatorship became entrenched, abandoned career-pursuit, built the Tányuán (Sandalwood Garden) at his Jiādìng home, and devoted himself to literature and painting until his death in 1629. He is recorded in the Míng shǐ wényuànzhuàn appended to Táng Shíshēng’s biography. He is grouped with Lóu Jiān 婁堅 (cf. KR4e0231), Táng Shíshēng, and Chéng Jiāsuì as the Jiādìng sì xiānshēng 嘉定四先生 (Four Masters of Jiādìng). As a painter he is a major wénrén landscape figure with close affinity to Dǒng Qíchāng 董其昌 and Chén Jìrú 陳繼儒; his paintings are extant in major museum collections and were highly prized by his contemporaries. Tányuán jí 檀園集 (KR4e0232) is his collected works; he is also known for his tíhuà bá (colophons on paintings), which form 2 juǎn of that collection. CBDB 34751.
