Lǐ Hàn 李漢 (d. 844)

Nánjì 南紀. Native of Lǒngxī 隴西. Son-in-law and pupil of Hán Yù 韓愈; jìnshì of Yuánhé 7 (812). Successively zuǒ shíyí 左拾遺, jiàoshūláng 校書郎, and Hézhōu cìshǐ 河州刺史 in the Chángqìng / Bǎolì periods (820s).

His one major scholarly contribution is the original 40-juǎn edition of his father-in-law Hán Yù’s collected works (the Hán Chánglí jí 韓昌黎集), compiled at Hán Yù’s death in 824 with Lǐ’s substantial preface (a foundational document of Tang literary biography, preserved in every later Hán Yù edition). The Lǐ Hàn 40-juǎn arrangement is the original table-of-contents form of the corpus, preserved across the entire SòngYuánMíngQīng transmission and in the principal annotated editions (KR4c0044, KR4c0045, KR4c0046).
