Lǐ Kǎi 李鍇 (1686–1755), zì Tiějūn 鐵君, hào Méishān 眉山 (also Jiāomíngzǐ 焦明子). A Hàn-bannerman of the Plain White Banner (Xiāngbáiqí Hànjūn 鑲白旗漢軍); his ancestral home was Xiāngpíng 襄平 (the Hàn-period commandery seat of Liáodōng 遼東, modern Liáoyáng 遼陽 in Shèngjīng 盛京) — he signs his preface to the Shàngshǐ “of Xiāngpíng,” reflecting his family’s ancestry in the Liáodōng region. A privately-supported scholar throughout his life — he held no office under either Kāngxī or Yōngzhèng — Lǐ Kǎi is principally known for the Shàngshǐ 尚史 (KR2d0024), his 107-juǎn re-cast of Mǎ Sù’s 馬驌 Yìshǐ 繹史 (1670) into jìzhuàn form. He records in his preface that he began the project in Yōngzhèng 8 (gēngxū, 1730) and completed it in Qiánlóng 10 (yǐchǒu, 1745), sixteen years of labour; he completed editorial revisions in his last decade.
