Lín Língzhēn 林靈真 (本名 Wěifū 偉夫, zì Jūnzhāo 君昭, hào Shuǐnán 水南; fǎmíng 法諱 Língzhēn; b. 28 ix 1239 = 嘉熙己亥, d. 1302) was the eleventh-generation patriarch (jiàozhǔ) of the Dōnghuá 東華 transmission of the Língbǎo dàfǎ and the principal redactor of the Língbǎo lǐngjiào jìdù jīnshū (KR5b0150). He was a native of Línniè 林坳, Píngyáng 平陽, Wēnzhōu, of a gentry family — grandfather Lín Jié 林楶 (Wǔjīngláng 武經郎), father Lín Sìsūn 林嗣孫 (Bǎoyìláng 保義郎), mother née Xú 徐 of Táozhǔ 桃渚.

Lín was raised in classical and Daoist learning; he passed neither the jǔrén nor the jìnshì examinations, receiving only the modest rank of Dēngshìláng 登仕郎. After the loss of his mother in the SòngYuán transition he abandoned secular career, converted his ancestral residence into a Daoist guàn (Dānyuánguàn 丹元觀, gates inscribed 水南福地), and was ordained by Dài Wěi 戴煟, Fùān xiānshēng 復庵先生. He took Shuǐnán 水南 as hào in memory of his mother’s pre-natal dream of southern flood-waters.

Lín studied successively under Lín Xūyī 林虛一 and Xuē Dōnghuá 薛東華, inheriting the Dōnghuá lineage descended from Níng Quánzhēn 寧全真 (q.v.). On returning to Wēnzhōu he was appointed Xuánxué jiǎngshī (玄學講師) and then Dàolù 道録 of Wēnzhōu prefecture by the reigning Daoist Patriarch (= the 38th Celestial Master, Zhāng Yǔchū 張與材, fl. ca. 1290–1316). He thereafter assembled the great compendium of Língbǎo liturgy (a jìdù zhī shū in ten juàn, plus fúzhāng in two juàn, growing eventually to the 321-juàn Lǐngjiào jìdù jīnshū of KR5b0150); the text was approved by the Patriarch, printed by the Wēnzhōu Xuánsī under his commission, and Lín was titled Língbǎo tōngxuán hóngjiào fǎshī jiàomén gāoshì 靈寶通玄弘教法師教門髙士.

He served until his death as abbot of the Tiānqīngguàn 天清觀 in Wēnzhōu; over a hundred disciples are said to have studied under him, including the Xiánxián Wúgōng 閑閑吳公, Jīnhuá Xiègōng 金華謝公, and many others named in the Sìjiào lù. He died in 1302 (大德六年). CBDB has no entry. Cf. Schipper & Verellen, Taoist Canon 2: 1027–1029; Boltz, Survey (1987), pp. 47–50; Wáng Chéngwén 王承文 (2002).
