Yáng Shìqí 楊士奇 (1365–1444), original name 寓, later Shìqí 士奇, hào Dōnglǐ 東里, posthumous Wénzhēn 文貞, was the most senior of the early-Míng Hànlín Senior Grand Secretaries — the Sān Yáng (Three Yangs: Yáng Shìqí, Yáng Róng 楊榮, Yáng Pǔ 楊溥) who together dominated the cabinet through the Yǒnglè, Hóngxī, Xuāndé, and early-Zhèngtǒng reigns. From Tàihé 泰和 (modern Jiāngxī), he never passed the jìnshì — entering office through jiànbá (recommendation) for his literary excellence under Tàizǔ — but rose through Hànlín posts to Lǐbù shàngshū and Huágàidiàn dàxuéshì; he served as Senior Grand Secretary from c. 1424 (Hóngxī) until his death in 1444.

Yáng was the principal editor of the great early-Míng official compilations: the KR2f0039 Lìdài míngchén zòuyì 歷代名臣奏議 in 350 juàn (1416), in collaboration with Huáng Huái 黃淮; the Tàizōng (Yǒnglè) shílù 太宗實錄; the Rénzōng (Hóngxī) shílù 仁宗實錄; and the Xuānzōng (Xuāndé) shílù 宣宗實錄. He was also the principal compiler of the Wǔcháo guóshǐ (Five Reigns Official History) project. As cabinet-leader he was particularly responsible for the consolidation of the early-Míng grain-tribute system, the personnel-evaluation system, and the post-1424 retrenchment from Yǒnglè’s expansionist program.

His son Yáng Jì 楊稷 was implicated in homicide in 1442; Yáng Shìqí was forced into a Bìzé (avoidance-of-blame) leave but allowed to remain in nominal office until his death two years later. The family disgrace darkened his late years.

His personal collected works are Dōnglǐ wénjí 東里文集 in 25 juàn and xùjí 25 juàn. Míng shǐ j. 148 has his biography. CBDB id 28113 (1365–1444), confirmed by Míng shǐ and Wikidata.
