Yáng Wényán 楊文言

Early-Qīng calendrical writer. CBDB c_personid 623877 (dynasty Qing); birth and death years not recorded, and no biographical detail entered in the standard prosopographies consulted. Author of KR3fb017 Lìxiàng běnyào 曆象本要 in 2 juàn — a primer setting out the conceptual basis (“essentials”) of post-Chóngzhēn / Shíxiàn-era Western-style astronomy as a glossary of “new calendrical terms” 新曆法名 contrasted with the inherited Chinese usage. The work presupposes the Shíxiàn reform of 1645 and is conventionally dated to the early-to-mid Kāngxī era (notBefore 1645 / notAfter c. 1700).

The work places Yáng among the second-tier Qīng popularisers of Jesuit-derived astronomy, alongside more prominent figures such as Wáng Xīchǎn 王錫闡 and Méi Wéndǐng 梅文鼎; he is otherwise obscure.
