Máo Zài 毛在 (b. 1544; death year uncertain) was a late-Míng shìrén of Tàicāng 太倉 (then in Sūzhōu prefecture, Nánzhílì; modern Jiāngsū). Zì Jūnmíng 君明. CBDB (id 206137) records the birth year 1544 but no death year and no firm office record, consistent with the Sìkù tíyào’s observation that he “signed himself as a native of Tàicāng, but his start and end are not detailed” (自署太倉人其始末則未詳也).
He is known principally as the compiler of supplementary entries to 耿定向 Gěng Dìngxiàng’s Xiānjìn yífēng 先進遺風 KR3l0087. The supplemented work was printed in Chén Jìrú 陳繼儒’s Mìjí 秘笈 imprint; the Sìkù compilers found that the merged text no longer cleanly distinguishes Gěng’s original entries from Máo’s zēngbǔ (增補) continuations, and only a typographic hypothesis (indented vs. flush-left opening characters) is available to attempt a separation.
