Máo Cháng 毛萇

The “Lesser Máo” (Xiǎo Máo gōng 小毛公) of the Hàn Shī 詩 tradition. Pupil (in some accounts, nephew) of 毛亨 the “Greater Máo.” Native of Zhào 趙. According to the Hàn shū · Rúlín zhuàn 漢書·儒林傳 he served as Erudite (bóshì 博士) under Hé Jiān Xiànwáng 河間獻王 (Liú Dé 劉德, d. 130 BCE), to whom he transmitted the Máoshī recension; thereafter the Máoshī circulated as the official gǔwén 古文 Shī of the Hé Jiān principality and gradually displaced the three jīnwén 今文 traditions of Lǔ 魯, Qí 齊, and Hán 韓.

His role in the formation of the received Máoshī gǔxùn zhuàn 毛詩故訓傳 (the Máo zhuàn layer of KR1c0001 / KR1c0002 / KR1c0004) is disputed. Some modern scholars regard him as the actual editor-redactor whose work was retrospectively attributed to his teacher; others treat both Máos as semi-legendary projections of the Western-Hàn gǔwén school’s self-presentation. Lifedates are unrecoverable; he was active in the second century BCE (mid-Hàn, under Jǐngdì 景帝 and Wǔdì 武帝). No CBDB record was located.
