Wáng Chèn 王稱 (also read Wáng Chēng; zì Jìpíng 季平), Southern-Sòng historian active in the late twelfth century, native of Méizhōu 眉州 (modern Méishān 眉山, Sìchuān). Son of Wáng Shǎng 王賞 (?–1149; see 王賞), a Shílù xiūzhuàn 實錄修撰 of the Shàoxīng 紹興 reign. Wáng Chèn inherited his father’s archival materials and used them to compile, over many years, the Dōngdū shìlüè 東都事略 (KR2d0007), a 130-juǎn private jìzhuàn history of the Northern Sòng (the “Eastern Capital” 東都 here being Biànliáng 汴梁). On Hóng Mài 洪邁’s recommendation while compiling the Sìcháo guóshǐ 四朝國史 (the “History of Four Reigns” — Shénzōng, Zhézōng, Huīzōng, Qīnzōng), Wáng’s manuscript was presented to the throne, in return for which Wáng was promoted from Chéngyìláng 承議郎 and Prefect of Lóngzhōu 龍州 to Zhímìgé 直秘閣. The Sìkù tíyào identifies the Dōngdū shìlüè as one of the three great Sòng private histories, alongside Lǐ Tāo’s 李燾 Xù Zīzhì tōngjiàn chángbiān and Lǐ Xīnchuán’s 李心傳 Jiànyán yǐlái xìnián yàolù — “the three legs of the historiographical tripod.” His other writings have not survived. CBDB id 10212 (no dates), corroborated against the catalog meta which marks him “12th cent.”
