Wáng Zhì 王質
Zì Jǐngwén 景文, hào Xuěshān 雪山. Native of Xīngguó 興國 (modern Jiāngxī). Jìnshì of Shàoxīng 30 (1160). Held office through Shūmìyuàn biānxiū 樞密院編修, then sent out as tōngpàn of Jīngnánfǔ 荊南府 and later of Jízhōu 吉州.
(The catalog meta gives 1127–1189, but CBDB and the standard Sòng biographical literature give 1135–1189; this entry follows the CBDB / external attestation.)
Author of Shī zǒngwén 詩總聞 in 20 juǎn (KR1c0014). One of the three Southern-Sòng Shī commentators — together with Zhèng Qiáo 鄭樵 and Zhū Xī 朱熹 — who rejected the small preface. Huáng Zhèn 黃震 in his Rìchāo 日鈔 names “Xuěshān Wáng Zhì” and “Jiájì Zhèng Qiáo” as the first to “set aside the xù and discuss the Shī”; the Sìkù editors note that Zhū Xī was widely understood to have followed Zhèng but not Wáng, indicating that the three positions, while structurally similar, were not interchangeable. Wáng Zhì’s silence on the xù (rather than its explicit denunciation) made his work less polemical than Zhèng’s and earned it a more durable readership.
