His career identifies him squarely with the senior Rénzōng civil-military elite of the Qìnglì — Jiāyòu generation. As a young officer he had been Xià Sòng’s mùliáo at the XīXià frontier; the Hǎoshuǐchuān defeat (1041) is the formative event of his early career, and his vigorous memorial-criticism after it shaped his reputation as a constructive critic of policy. His one surviving prose work is KR3l0029 Rúlín gōngyì 儒林公議 in 1 juàn, the principal contemporary witness to the rise of péngdǎng (faction) rhetoric in the Qìnglì xīnzhèng period. His 30-juàn memorial collection is lost; some pieces survive in Sòng huìyào jígǎo and other collections.
