Republican-era Chinese philosopher, philologist, diplomat, and literary historian (1891–1962). Major figure in the New Culture Movement. Pioneered modern critical scholarship on Chinese Chán, particularly through his work on Dūnhuáng Chán manuscripts and his treatment of Shénhuì 神會.
