Ryōnin 良忍 (1072–1132), founder of the Yūzū-nenbutsu-shū 融通念佛宗 and one of the seminal figures in late-Heian Japanese Pure Land devotion. Born in Owari, ordained on Mt. Hiei in the Tendai tradition, and trained in the Tendai jōgyō zanmai (constant-walking samādhi) practice before retiring to Ōhara (Kyoto) and from there to Hirano in Settsu (Osaka). The founding legend records that on the 23rd day of the 5th month of Eikyū 5 / 1117 Ryōnin received a direct revelation from Amida (“the one-person’s nenbutsu interpenetrates with all persons’ nenbutsu, and all persons’ nenbutsu interpenetrate with one person’s nenbutsu” — 一人一切人、一切人一人、一行一切行、一切行一行、是名他力往生十界一念融通念佛), the doctrinal kanjō that established the yūzūinterpenetration — doctrine of the school. He founded the Dainenbutsu-ji at Hirano, which is still the head temple of the school. He was posthumously honored as Shōō Daishi 聖應大師.
