Wàn Sīdà 萬斯大 (1633–1683). Chōngzōng 充宗, hào Bǒwēng 跛翁. Native of Yīnxiàn 鄞縣 (modern Níngbō, Zhèjiāng). Elder brother of Wàn Sītóng 萬斯同 (1638–1702). Disciple of Huáng Zōngxī 黃宗羲 (1610–1695); central figure of the Sìmíng-school of Sānlǐ and Chūnqiū scholarship. Did not enter Qīng official service.

A specialist on the Sānlǐ (Three Ritual Classics) of conspicuous breadth and original analytic intensity. Author of two Sìkù-admitted works on the Ritual Classics: KR1d0039 Yílǐ shāng 儀禮商 in 2 juan (with appendix), and KR1d0080 Xuélǐ zhìyí 學禮質疑 in 2 juan; also a major Chūnqiū scholar (Xuéchūnqiū suíbǐ 學春秋隨筆 in the Sìkù) and a Lǐjì scholar. The Sìkù tíyào of KR1d0039 characterises Wàn’s method as “originally encyclopaedic in learning, especially sharp in deployed thought” but also as “vigorous to the point of self-assertion.” Wàn’s distinctive readings — including his arguments about the cháoshì (audience hall) lacking a táng and his redefinition of xiāng (side-room) as a corridor structure — are typically iconoclastic; the Sìkù editors disagree on multiple specific points but acknowledge the originality of Wàn’s evidential investigations.
