Xuē Shōu 薛收
Early-Táng official and litterateur. Zì Bóbāo 伯褒. Native of Fényīn 汾陰 in Hédōng 河東 (modern Wànróng 萬榮, Shānxī). Son of the Suí magistrate Xuē Dàohéng 薛道衡; nephew (and disciple) of Wáng Tōng 王通 of Lóngmén — accordingly the prototypical “Héfén school” 河汾學派 figure of the Suí–Táng transition.
Came into Lǐ Shìmín’s 李世民 service in the Wǔdé era as one of the Wénxué guǎn shíbā xuéshì 文學館十八學士 — the eighteen scholars of the Crown Prince’s Literary Academy. Held appointment as Tiāncè fǔ jìshì cānjūn 天策府記室參軍 and Zhǔbù 主簿. His memorials and biǎo drafted on Lǐ Shìmín’s behalf during the Wǔdé campaigns — particularly the Píng Wáng Shìchōng biǎo 平王世充表 — were celebrated. He died young in 624 (Wǔdé 7), aged only 33 suì; Tàizōng on his accession personally lamented his loss.
The “continuation” of the Yuán jīng 元經 from Suí Kāihuáng 10 (590) to Táng Wǔdé 1 (618) traditionally attributed to him (cf. KR2b0005) is, like the rest of the Yuán jīng itself, almost certainly a Northern Sòng forgery by Ruǎn Yì 阮逸 (so the Sìkù tíyào, citing Chén Shīdào, Hé Wèi, and Shào Bó); the attribution to Xuē Shōu is part of the forgery’s pseudo-pedigree. CBDB id 18768 (lifedates 592–624 confirmed). Biographies in Jiù Táng shū 73 and Xīn Táng shū 98.
