Qìnglì generation gǔwén poet, Zǐměi 子美, of Tóngshān 銅山 (Zǐzhōu, Sìchuān) origin; later resided at Kāifēng and finally Sūzhōu. Grandson of Sū Tài 蘇耆, great-grandson of Sū Yìjiǎn 蘇易簡 (the jǐngdé-era councillor). Jìnshì of Jǐngyòu 1 / 1034. Married to Dù Yǎn’s 杜衍 daughter, placing him at the center of the Qìnglì reform faction. Held Jíxián xiàolǐ; dismissed in Qìnglì 4 / 1044 in the Zòuyuàn scandal — a partisan attack from the anti-reform faction targeting his connection with Dù Yǎn. Retired to Sūzhōu, built the Cānglàng tíng 滄浪亭 on ruined WúYuè garden ground, lived there as a private literatus. Died Qìnglì 8 / 1048 age 41. Bracketed with Méi Yáochén 梅堯臣 as “SūMéi” 蘇梅 in Ōuyáng Xiū’s classic formulation — the principal pre-Ōuyáng innovators of gǔwén poetry.
